"I will never forget the day my mom told me to wash strawberries. As a typical inquisitive 4 year old, I asked, 'Why?' Because fruit pickers pick their nose was her response. I then washed them - sometimes.
Now as a 31 year old, I buy organic produce which must mean it is free from boogers and by all means, it best be free from pesticides. But as a med student with a wife, two kids and a mortgage, the wallet feels stress when buying organic produce...."

Unborn babies soaked in chemicals, study finds - Children's Health - MSNBC.com
"Unborn babies soaked in chemicals, study finds
Average of 287 contaminants found in cord blood of U.S. infants.
WASHINGTON - Unborn U.S. babies are soaking in a stew of chemicals, including mercury, gasoline byproducts and pesticides, according to a report released Thursday.
Although the effects on the babies are not clear, the survey prompted several members of Congress to press for legislation that would strengthen controls on chemicals in the environment...."
Nic Says: This is an interesting article, click on the link to read more. It is a pretty horrific thought, although I guess not surprising. What is amazing to me, is the adaptability of the human organism, for the most part. It certainly warrants a lot of serious thought and study, as to how much these toxic chemicals influence our health and disease! From my point of view it is just common sense that the effect cannot help be detrimental.

Ecology Action - Cultivating Our Garden
"The GROW BIOINTENSIVE Method - GROW BIOINTENSIVE mini-farms require much less area to produce the same yield of crops, so the nutrients contained in one person's wastes can be applied in a more concentrated way. This enables the nutrients to be fully effective, and high yields can result.
Because of this higher productivity, GROW BIOINTENSIVE practices could allow one-half to three-quarters of the world to be left in wild for the preservation of plant and animal diversity.
It has been said that GROW BIOINTENSIVE practices might make it possible to grow food for all the people in the US in just the area now used for lawns. This possibility could mean thriving, agriculturally self-reliant cities with 'green belts' to produce all their food."
Nic Says: What an absolutely wonderful concept. This site is definitely worth closer inspection.

The term "permaculture " means a system of sustaining human needs (including agriculture, energy, and housing) in ways that are indefinitely renewable. Permaculture works with nature, not against her."
Nic Says: An interesting site I came accross that provides training in Permaculture.

Daily parcels - Tied up in string: Brown-paper-parcels ~ Memories are made of this!
"So; I am continuing on and promise to try to adhere to all things organic - it is so hard though when I go down to my vegie garden and find that the slugs have had an overnight party in my new turnips or those white butterflys start discovering my cabbages and broccoli , is it worth all the trouble ? YES ! to get rid of as many chemicals as we can from our lives must be a plus ! "

Every Pharmaceutical Drug LEECHES Nutrients From Your Body
Author: Dave Saunders
"Every Pharmaceutical Drug LEECHES Nutrients From Your Body:
Are you currently on one or more pharmaceutical drugs? Perhaps you are not aware, but every pharmaceutical drug depletes the body of various nutrients, depriving your cells of the essential raw materials which drive normal, natural cell function. The data on our industrialized food supply already suggestes that each of us is not getting enough nutrition from diet alone. If you're taking one or more pharmaceutical drugs, your situtation is likely to be even worse. "
Nic Says: An excellent article, definitely worth a read. While not intended to replace proper Medical advice, it is important to become aware of the dangers that are posed by chemical intervention within the biological organism. While sometimes unavoidable, there are really a lot of things we, as individuals can do, to take some responsibility for our own health. By choosing, the common sense healthy approach of healthy habits and diet, and the removal of excessive chemicals within our internal and external environment, we can make some amazing changes. We can improve our quality of life... and isn't that what life is all about?

"Acne Skin Care: Dealing With Problem Skin
Beauty Products
You have probably heard of dry skin, oily skin and combination skin. If you have acne, you may have decided that your skin type is either oily or combination. But actually, it's neither of these. Acne prone skin falls into a completely different category: problem skin. Problem skin ?
If you are prone to developing acne, you should look for skin care products that are made to deal with acne. Don't use any beauty products that have added dyes and perfumes, as these ingredients can seriously aggravate your blemishes. Use a natural product like Oxy-Skin? for your facial needs......
Choose oil free cosmetics and beauty products. Regular make up contains fatty acids that are higher in fat than the fatty acids in your skin. Look for organic cosmetics that are made for sensitive or acne prone....."

FDA Failing to Remove Toxic Chemicals from Cosmetics
"(WOMENSENEWS)--It's the beauty industry's ugly secret.
For decades, cosmetic companies have made products containing chemical compounds that have been linked to reproductive birth defects and cancer.
The compounds are phthalates (pronounced THA-laytes) and they help cosmetics adhere without smudging.
The European Union has banned phthalates from all cosmetics and now a coalition of advocacy groups has given U.S. companies a deadline of Monday, May 3 to support a ban....."

Every little bit counts: Garden update
"Oh, right, so my garden...I'm sure you're just sitting on the edge of your seat waiting to hear all about it!
My garden is doing well so far. The fence Dave put up is keeping out any groundhogs as my broccoli plants are still there! Hooray! On Thursday of last week I went out and found a raised trail bisecting my bean rows and heading toward the broccoli and pepper plants in a big Y shape a la Bugs Bunny:"

flight of the robberfly: Granola Crunchers?
"Four. Organic food. It just makes sense to me to buy food that hasn't been sprayed with pesticides. Especially now, that studies are surfacing suggesting that pesticides contribute to cancer (as do processed foods). Plus it tastes better, and you know you are eating healthy. We probably buy 95% organic."

SG1-Atlantis.com
"Season nine of Stargate SG-1 premieres Friday, July 15, on the Sci Fi Channel. I sat down to talk with one of the series stars, Amanda Tapping, Lt. Col. Samantha Carter, Ph.D. about how she balances her life as a new mom and what she has done to create a wellness lifestyle for herself in an industry that can be highly stressful.
I'm back at work and bring the baby with me, says Tapping, who describes her new bundle of joy as a Gerber baby look-a-like with light brown curly hair. I'm up at 5 a.m., get showered and ready, feed the baby, then stay at work until 7 or 7:30 at night. But don't get her wrong, Tapping is thrilled to have her first baby and comfortable about being back on the set. After a couple of miscarriages and longing to have a family, the successful actress is determined to make it work as both a dedicated mom and a TV lieutenant. She is also thankful that she can bring the baby to work, with the help of a full-time nanny.
The discipline of Tapping's on-screen character crosses over into real life as she talks about how she prepared for the pregnancy and her overall commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Prior to and during her pregnancy she was devoted to a daily regimen of eating right, exercising, and getting enough rest.
Diet and exercise are a given. I eat fish and salad everyday at work and drink a ton of water. I use common sense and am smart about it, she says. Also, the last ten years, and especially since becoming pregnant, she has been more conscious of organic food options. The more I read about modified foods, farmed fish, hormones, pesticides - it's scary."
Nic Says: Well, yes I admit it.... I have been known to watch the odd episode of Stargate.... Isn't it interesting how many celebrities choose the healthy lifestyle option? Good on you Amanda.... and lucky baby, too!

Two weeks, 235 miles and two titles
"Tuesday morning, the Seattle physical therapist completed the Badwater Ultramarathon, a hellish 135-mile race from the bowels of Death Valley to the slopes of Mt. Whitney, with a time of 24 hours, 36 minutes, 8 seconds. He broke the record set in 2000 by Russian runner Anatoli Kruglikov's by nearly an hour.
It takes most runners nearly three days to complete the event."
.....Dan Moores, owner of Auburn Running Company, said Jurek's vegan diet, in which he eats only organic food without any animal products, may have something do with his incredible endurance, but his genetics are likely adding to success.
Nic Says: Fantastic effort, Jurek, and certainly blows apart the myth of the necessity for animal content in ones diet! Organic Vegan too I note.... mmmm I wonder... ?
